There are 1,318 active vessels in Ireland.

82% are under 12 meters in length and categorised as Small-Scale-Fisheries(SSF).  They operate within 12 nautical miles of the coast.

18% are termed as (Large-Scale Fisheries) LSF vessels, and predominantly work out of Killybegs and Castletownbere.

The majority of the fleet are characterised as polyvalent vessels,  using several types of fishing gear, including pots, trammel nets, set gillnets, set longline and handlines, with some vessels using more than one type on a single fishing trip.

Mackerel and horse mackerel, crab and Nephrops are the top landed species by weight.

Direct employment generated by the sector is estimated at 2,687 jobs.

The most recent recorded landings by weight were 175,800 tonnes.
