Fishing for Litter is a very positive action on the waste management at Howth Fishery Harbour Centre, having fishermen collect waste from the sea and return it to the harbour in Howth, sets a good example and protects our marine environment for all.  Howth Fishery Harbour Centre has also been operating a Sea Bin, collecting floating litter from the harbour, this initiative has removed a lot of litter to date, resulting in a cleaner marine environment for all harbour users.

Harold Mc Loughlin
Harbour Master, CMM, Howth Fishery Harbour Centre, Co. Dublin

The ‘Fishing for Litter’ by fishermen benefits the marine environment by removing existing litter from the seas, where fishermen fish, especially harmful plastics, ghost gear and other debris. These items are stored on board fishing vessels until they return to port, where the waste is disposed of in a controlled process, preventing contamination of marine ecosystems into the future.”

Aidan Bates
Acting Marine Officer, Wexford County Council, Harbour Masters Office, Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford
