- Don’t throw rubbish overboard
- Bring any rubbish found during fishing activities ashore and dispose of it in suitable facilities if they exist.
- Find out whether a waste collection programme exists in your fishing port and what the guidelines are.
- Fishing gear is made up of different materials. At the end of their life, fishing gear must be dismantled for separate collection.
- Some of the materials used in fishing gear can be recycled (for example PA, PE)
- Use the designated collection points correctly and avoid mixing fishing gear with other waste streams.
- Separate recyclable materials, particularly polyamide (PA) nets, whenever possible.
- There are recycling companies that transform certain types of fishing net into plastic granules that can then be used to make new objects.
- Participate in Fishing for Litter and other waste collection initiatives available in the port.
- Follow the waste management procedures established by the port authority or fishermen’s organisation.
- Report any difficulties or limitations of the collection system so that improvements can be implemented.
- Learn about the recycling process and the final destination of recovered fishing gear, as understanding its environmental value can encourage greater participation.
- Share good waste management practices with other fishermen and promote responsible behaviour within the fishing community.
